The brakes in particular can get scorching hot by the third and fourth sectors of the course. Pikes Peak isn’t just bruising on the driver, but on the vehicle as well. Thanks to that lack of aids, a lot of throttle modulation is required to haul the mighty vehicle around the circuit. The only thing that helped with grip was the ultra-wide and sticky Toyo tires that it ran during the event. Not only that but there were zero traction aids on the truck. Making the Ford’s achievement more remarkable is the fact that Birdsall completed the run with a rear-wheel drive-only vehicle. ![]() An engine that produces 2,400 hp and 4,000 lb-ft of torque. Its little wonder the truck broke the record, thanks to its huge 6.7-liter Cummins powered under the hood. That was held by Uwe Nittel in a Mercedes-Benz C300D 4MATIC. Birdsall was able to drive up the mighty Pikes Peak with a time of 11:24.065, which beat the previous record by 13 seconds. The fact that a 70-year-old truck was able to claim such a prestigious record is one of the most impressive displays we’ve seen up the hill climb.
